Welcome to the City of Milbank – an active community that is growing and changing while still keeping traditions alive.

Milbank is located in northeast South Dakota on the south fork of the Whetstone Creek. This quiet community is along the Yellowstone Trail – the first transcontinental highway, known today as US Highway 12. Milbank is 178 miles west of Minneapolis, MN and 124 miles north of Sioux Falls, SD on SD Highway 15.

Founded in 1880 when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad first laid track in South Dakota, Milbank was named after railroad director Jeremiah Milbank. The city was incorporated in 1894 and is governed by a Mayor and Council.

Today Milbank has a population of 3,640 and is located in the heart of Grant County which has a population of 7,847. Surrounded by farmland, Milbank is 10 miles from Big Stone Lake.
