Spring Hydrant Flushing

Water Department personnel will be conducting spring hydrant flushing during the coming weeks.

4/24/24 between the hours of 10PM-2AM on 4th Avenue between the Water Plant (520 W 4th Ave.) and the Water Tower (609 S 9th St.)

4/25/24 between the hours of 10PM-2AM on South Main Street through the downtown area towards Diggs Avenue and west on Milbank Avenue.

Hydrants will also be flushed in the 5th Street Construction area of 5th & Park and 6th & Park

City hydrants are flushed regularly to ensure they are in working order for fire protection and to remove mineral deposits that may accumulate in water mains. During hydrant flushing, it is not unusual for residents to periodically experience discolored water or pressure changes.

If you notice discoloration and particles in your water supply during this process, turn your faucets on cold and let the water run until clear. Running an outside faucet is best. The discoloration is caused by iron and manganese that have settled into the water mains. Iron and manganese are two common minerals in water. Neither pose health hazard.     If the discoloration persists, please notify the water department at 605-432-9575.
